TheaterWorks on Grove
Under the direction of Billy Ayres, Arts for Healing's TheaterWorks on Grove program provides weekly workshops that foster socialization and self-expression through interactive musical and dramatic play experiences in a small group setting. Throughout the ten-week program, participants improvise and work together to compose a musical play. Participants play instruments, sing, act, create scenery, arrange props, and use movement to express themselves. Expressive and interpersonal skills are enhanced as participants explore and develop their own creative ideas in a supportive and nurturing environment. TheaterWorks is aided by teens from the community who join in the group and act as role models for socialization and communication. The program often includes a final performance of a play written by the participants, but its direction is dictated by the participants and may end up in unexpected places.
Invaluable resources and skills can be gained by participants in musical theater:
- language development and communication
- self-awareness, self-expression and self-confidence
- movement skills
- peer relationship-building
